Stepan Firstov is a participant of the WMA Council in Riga.

The World Medical Association holds the 209 WMA Council meeting on 26-28 April 2018, Riga (Latvia). Dr. Stepan Firstov takes part in the event as an WMA Associate Member from Russia.

Some key and strategic questions on the topic of healthcare development are discussed by the leaders of National Medical Associations and WMA Assocaite Members in the Radisson Blu Latvija Conference & Spa Hotel. Thus, there are topics relate to medical abortion, medical ethics, problems of women in medicine and medial tourism trends which are included in agenda.

In addition, participants will discuss issue of physicians’ professional autonomy. This topic is particularly relevant for Russia. It is known, that in our country a physician is still not subject of law, he or she does not receive a license for professional activity, formally or in fact he or she is not responsible for work to the professional community. This mission is entirely entrusted to the medical organization, where doctor works. In the whole civilized world, obtaining a license for medical activity by a hospital is nonsense. That is why, it is very important that professional autonomy of physicians and its practical expediency will be discussed one more time at WMA Council.

Other members of the Council also listen to the reports about past regional conferences, that have taken place in different countries of the world, after an international conference on euthanasia issue organized by the World Medical Association and Pontifical Academy for Life in Vatican. We remind, that leading medical professionals, lawyers, experts in palliative care and medical ethics, theologians and philosophers form all about the Europe, discussed different points of view for the right of terminally ill patients and their relatives to unconstrained completion of treatment and death. Among participants of the Conference there was Stepan Firstov.

The WMA Council meeting is closed event. Mass Media representatives are not allowed to enter considering ethical reasons. However, all journalists who wish to get information about the event or interview its participants are free to achieve their goals.
