Stepan Firstov: "The 217th WMA Council Session outcomes are summed up."

April 20-23, 2021 finished the 217th WMA Council Session in Seoul. The Presidium Member of the All-Russian public organization Society of doctors of Russia, an Associate Member of the World Medical Association Stepan Firstov actively participated and summed up all outcomes of the Council Session.

The Opening Ceremony started with the welcome speeches of the President of the Korean Medical Association Choi Dae zip and the Minister of Health and Welfare Gwon Deok cheol.

The meetings were opened by the WMA Secretary General Otmar Kloiber and the WMA Council Chair Frank U. Montgomery, who had been reelected as the WMA Council Chair till 2023. At the meeting was held not only the Plenary Session, but discussions of the WMA Financial and Planning committee, Medical Ethics committee and Socio-Medial Affairs committee. Some resolutions and statements were reviewed, for example, «Pandemic preparedness», «Photoprotection», «Plain Packaging», «Reproductive Technologies», «Physicians Treating Relatives», «Access of Women and Children to Health Care» and «Sports Medicine.» A lively interest was generated from all participants on issues of professional regulation, trade agreements, medical liability, migration, telemedicine, patients' safety, planetary health, palliative care, provision of medicines as well as equitable access to COVID-19.

It was decided to grant WMA Council seats to those National Medical Associations, who did not have it. There were among them the Pacific region, Latin America and Caribbean, Africa.

Reports were received from the working groups on Pandemic Preparedness, Junior Doctors Network and Medical Ethics committee. The report of the WMA Chair of Associate Membership Joseph Heyman described the increase number of members and their active position in the WMA activity. Members have finished all amendments made to rules and conditions of the WMA AM. Final version of it will be available at the next Session in October 2021.

Despite restrictions due to COVID-19 and online mode, the closing ceremony, as usual, finished in a traditional form with a joint photo via web cameras of about 155 represantatives of different countries.
